Eustachian Tube Dysfunction (ETD) Treatment in McAllen, TX

Addressing Chronic Ear Pain With Personalized ENT Care

The Eustachian tubes are what connect the middle ear to the back of the nose and the upper throat. They help drain fluid from the ear and equalize ear pressure. During normal function, these tubes open when swallowing or yawning. However, they can become blocked and impair function, leading to a condition called Eustachian Tube Dysfunction (ETD). ETD can potentially cause symptoms like recurring ear infection and chronic ear pain, pressure, or discomfort.

Here at Valley Breathe Free, our team specializes in diagnosing and treating ENT conditions like ETD in McAllen, Edinburg, Mission, Pharr, and the greater Rio Grande Valley.

What Are the Common Symptoms of ETD?

Symptoms of ETD vary in severity and duration, but common symptoms include:

  • Ear pain or discomfort
  • A feeling of ear fullness, pressure, or stuffiness
  • One or both ears feel “plugged”
  • Muffled or reduced sense of hearing
  • Popping or clicking sounds in the ears when swallowing or yawning
  • A ringing in the ears without an external source, also known as tinnitus

ETD symptoms can worsen with altitude changes (e.g., flying on planes, using elevators, or driving through mountains). If your symptoms persist or worsen, get in touch with your healthcare provider.

Can ETD Lead to Recurring Ear Infections?

When the Eustachian tubes fail to regulate ear pressure or drain fluid properly, fluid can accumulate in the middle ear. This creates an ideal environment for recurring or chronic ear infections. Common symptoms can include:

  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Balance issues
  • Fever
  • Nausea or vomiting

To effectively manage and treat recurring ear infections, it is crucial to determine whether ETD is the underlying cause.

How Is ETD Treated?

Our team at Valley Breathe Free tailors treatment plans based on the underlying cause and severity of the symptoms.

For Mild or Temporary ETD: Medications

Some mild cases can find relief from medications such as:

  • Decongestants to reduce swelling and inflammation
  • Antihistamines to address allergy-related symptoms
  • Nasal corticosteroids to minimize inflammation
  • Over-the-counter pain relievers for quick pain relief

In some cases where ETD is caused by temporary conditions like colds or altitude shifts, symptoms may resolve on their own.

For Severe or Chronic ETD: Balloon Eustachian Tuboplasty

If symptoms persist or recur, our ENT specialists may recommend balloon eustachian tuboplasty. It’s a minimally invasive procedure designed to improve the function of the Eustachian tubes. It’s an FDA-cleared procedure for the treatment of select cases of ETD.

HOW IT WORKS:

During the procedure, a small balloon catheter is inserted through the nasal passage and into the Eustachian tube. Then, the balloon is gently inflated, widening the passages. The balloon is then gently deflated and removed. This may help improve fluid drainage and ear pressure regulation in appropriately selected patients.

THE BENEFITS:

  • It’s a minimally invasive procedure that may be safe and effective for appropriately selected patients. Your ENT care provider can help determine if this is the right treatment for your condition.
  • It’s an outpatient procedure that is typically performed under local anesthesia.
  • For many patients, the procedure may take approximately one hour or less. Your doctor can discuss how this can vary based on the complexity of your condition.
  • No incisions or stitches are made.
  • Some patients report returning to normal activities within 24 to 48 hours after the procedure. However, individual recovery timelines may vary and should be discussed with your care provider.
⚠️ Not all ETD patients will require balloon eustachian tuboplasty. A consultation with your ENT care provider can help determine if this is the appropriate treatment for you.
