Deviated Septum Treatment

Individualized Consultation, Evaluation, and Treatment Care Plans

Here at Valley Breathe Free, our team of ENT and sinus experts has years of extensive experience diagnosing and treating deviated septum. A deviated septum is a common–yet often overlooked–condition that can impact one’s breathing, sinus health, and sleep.

If you’re experiencing persistent nasal obstruction or frequent sinus infections, a deviated septum may be one of several underlying causes. We work closely with our patients in McAllen, Edinburg, Mission, Pharr, and the greater Rio Grande Valley to provide evidence-based diagnoses and individualized care plans that can help address nasal obstruction and improve nasal airflow.

What Is a Deviated Septum?

There is a thin wall of bone and cartilage in the middle of the nose, dividing the nasal cavity into right and left sides, called the nasal septum. In some cases, the nasal septum can be misplaced and misaligned off-center, resulting in a deviated septum. It may be congenital and present at birth, may result from injury or trauma, or may be part of natural aging.

A deviated septum is a structural issue and may result in nasal obstruction, restricted airflow, and breathing difficulties. Sometimes, it can also increase the risk of sinus complications.

What Are the Common Symptoms Of a Deviated Septum?

Deviated septum symptoms vary per patient, but typical signs include:

  • Breathing difficulties
  • Nasal obstruction in one or both nostrils
  • Frequent sinus infections
  • Facial pain and pressure
  • Postnasal drip
  • Snoring or sleep disturbances

If symptoms persist or intensify, schedule a consultation with your ENT care provider.

How Is a Deviated Septum Diagnosed?

Our ENT specialists at Valley Breathe Free use nasal endoscopy and other diagnostic tools to diagnose a deviated septum. We examine the patient’s nasal anatomy and nasal airflow to come up with a diagnosis. Our diagnostic process may include:

  • In-office evaluation using minimally invasive tools
  • A detailed review of your medical history and symptoms, along with their severity
  • An assessment of your sinus function, as well as a review of several lifestyle factors

Treatment Options for a Deviated Septum

A consultation with your ENT care provider and an assessment of your nasal anatomy can help determine the appropriate treatment option according to your symptoms and the severity of the deviation. Treatment options include both non-surgical and surgical approaches.

Medications: Non-Surgical Treatment Option

For milder cases, medication may offer symptom relief:

  • Decongestants can break down mucus buildup and reduce sinus tissue swelling.
  • Nasal corticosteroids can reduce inflammation and support optimal airflow.
  • Saline irrigation can help clear mucus buildup.

These treatment options may help relieve symptoms for some individuals; however, they do not address the anatomical issue and can only help with symptom management.

Septoplasty: Surgical Treatment Option

If the medication approach doesn’t improve symptoms, your care provider may recommend septoplasty instead. It’s a surgical procedure that doesn’t just address the symptoms, it addresses one potential anatomical cause of nasal obstruction by repositioning the septum. This may help improve some patients’ airflow and breathing, depending on the severity of the deviation and other individual factors.

What to expect during the procedure:

  • It’s an outpatient procedure, approximately taking 30 to 90 minutes.
  • It’s typically performed under local or general anesthesia.
  • It only involves internal incisions, which means there is no visible scarring.
  • Although recovery timelines vary, many patients can return to light activities within a few days.
  • As with any surgical procedure, septoplasty may carry risks such as bleeding, infection, nasal swelling, mild discomfort, or septal perforation. A consultation with your ENT care provider will review all potential risks and benefits during the consultation to help you make an informed decision.

While individual results largely vary and outcomes cannot be guaranteed, some patients report improved airflow and sinus function following the procedure and full recovery.
